THOUGHTS:
The show-stopper is back with a unique album that represents his eclectic style. David Phelps delivers a project that runs the gamut of styles with his Stowtown Records debut, GameChanger. This fifteen song album features jazz, R&B, pop, Gospel, and even Broadway inspired songs.While this project definitely leans more into contemporary stylings, it still has a gospel heart to it. Phelps got his start in contemporary music prior to joining the legendary Gaither Vocal Band so this is a natural progression for him as an artist. It may be a departure for some, but his electrifying vocals and the message is still present. “Give It Time” reminds us that time can heal wounds and that things are gonna be alright. “Song For Sinners” is a jazzy tune that beckons lost souls to come home. “Hello Beautiful,” the first single from the project, is a tribute to a lifelong commitment that showcases Phelps’ stellar vocals. Other highlights include: “Eye To Eye,” a beautiful duet with his son Grant that tells of their complex relationship, “I’m Gonna Love,” a pop styled tune that encourages people to Love like Christ. The beautiful ballad “I Remember What We Thought Love Was” is dedicated to his wife.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
DAVID PHELPS IS ONE OF THE ALL TIME BEST TENORS IN GOSPEL MUSIC IN MY OPINION. THIS ALBUM, WHILE NOT EXACTLY A SOUTHERN GOSPEL ALBUM IN THE TRADITIONAL SENSE, IS ANOTHER STELLAR RECORDING FROM THIS LEGEND. HIS ARTISTRY IS ON FULL DISPLAY ON THIS GAME CHANGING RECORDING.
