THOUGHTS:
Guy Penrod is back with another solo effort that is sure to please some fans of his decade long tenure with the Gaither Vocal Band. Classics is a collection of twelve of Penrod’s most popular songs with the group including: the country style “The Baptism Of Jess Taylor,” the Gaither classic “Loving God, Loving Each Other,” and the powerful “Then Came The Morning.” This is a definite trip down memory lane for the listener and Penrod as well I’m sure. Penrod uses the original studio tracks for each song, though some tracks may have been keyed a step lower than the previous version. While I enjoyed this recording, I felt some songs were slightly lacking without the other harmonies which is no real fault of Penrod’s. His voice still sounds incredible on these iconic GVB tunes. Guy shines on perhaps my favorite of his GVB features “The Old Rugged Cross Made The Difference.” His new vocal is superb though the rest is mostly unchanged. Another highlight is his new vocal on “Count On Me,” which he record early in his GVB career. Penrod proves he can still hit the power notes and is a consistent vocalist. I also enjoyed hearing his versions of “Because He Lives,” and “Knowing You’ll Be There,” again.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Overall, this project is sure to please fans of Guy Penrod and the Gaither Vocal Band. I would have liked to hear fresh tracks and maybe slightly different interpretations of these songs, but his consistency is to be commended. Though it lacked in some areas, I truly enjoyed this collection of Guy Penrod and Gaither classics.
