THOUGHTS:
THE VENUE:
El Cajon Wesleyan Church once again played host to the award winning Southern Gospel Quartet, Legacy Five, on the evening of May 1, 2016. This was the second time attending an L5 concert at this venue, which is an excellent church and a great concert setting. The event was well planned which is a credit to the pastoral staff and promoter Ruth Ann DeForest. Mrs. DeForest is a blessing to the Southern California area and is truly dedicated to spreading the Gospel to all. I would like to thank her for bringing groups like Legacy Five out here!
A MEMORABLE INTERVIEW:
About thirty minutes before the concert, I was able to sit down with bass singer Matt Fouch to film my first video interview for Southern Gospel Spotlight. This was especially fitting since Fouch was the first person I interviewed for this blog back in January of 2015. Matt Fouch is one of my favorite bass singers singing today. Not only is he an incredible vocalist, he is more importantly a true man of God. His love for the Savior is evident in his performances as well as at the product table. I truly enjoyed this interview complete with hilarious interruptions. Thanks again to Matt Fouch for taking the time to chat with me! Stay tuned for the video on my Youtube channel!

WHAT A TIME OF WORSHIP:
This incredible night of praise and worship began with prayer. The quartet took the stage and immediately kicked things off with a string of energy filled hits “Great Day,” “Bloodwashed Band,” and one of my favorite Cathedral classics “He Made A Change.” Matt Fouch and new tenor Josh Feemster nailed their respective step- outs on the Ernie Haase penned song. Scott Fowler, lead singer, founder, and MC, greeted the crowd and expressed his thanks. He then introduced the next classic song “What A Lovely Name,” which features Josh Feemster’s stellar tenor on the last chorus. After these incredible songs, I knew the night was going to be great!! Next, Fowler introduced bass singer extraordinaire Matt Fouch, who was then featured on the mid-tempo quartet tune “Working, Watching, Waiting,” which appears on their latest recording Talkin’ About Heaven. Fouch continues to impress me with his ability to deliver a lyric as well as his incredible range. Fouch took the lead again on the beautiful ballad “I’ve Been Changed,” which is one of my all time favorite Legacy Five songs. Such a great performance!!

Scott Fowler took a moment to introduce the youngest member of the group, 26 year old pianist Trey Ivey. This of course included hilarious comedy from charter member Scott Howard, who always teases Ivey about his youthfulness. Fowler then had Ivey play a classical piece from his time at conservatory. In my opinion, Trey Ivey is one of the best pianists and overall musicians in Southern Gospel Music. He played the piece called “Movement #2” masterfully as well as the Gospel classic “Goodbye World Goodbye.”
Following this great performance, the group performed a fun old song straight from the red back hymnal, “Grand And Glorious Feeling.” This is one of my favorites from their latest record and is simply excellent live in concert. The quartet’s blend is better than ever as evidenced in this fun quartet song. Next, original member and resident funny man, Scott Howard was featured on the mid-tempo song of thankfulness called “So Many Things.” This song fits Howard’s voice like a glove! His smooth baritone is among the best in the Southern Gospel field.

Following Howard’s spotlight, Scott Fowler introduced the new face of the group, tenor Josh Feemster. Feemster sang lead with Mercy’s Mark from 2004 until 2007. In October of last year, Feemster joined Legacy Five as their new tenor following the departure of Gus Gaches. He brings a fresh and unique voice to the group that fits in well. Fowler told the audience the story of Feemster’s journey to the group which involved training from one of the top vocal coaches in Nashville. His vocal coach saw something truly special in him and his voice. I have to agree with him! Feemster’s gifted voice shined on a Legacy Five tenor classic “I Stand Redeemed,” which had the audience on their feet! I was blown away by his emotion filled performance.
Next, Scott Fowler addressed the importance of God in the founding of this great nation. A large majority of the Founders were Christians though this fact is hardly taught in the public schools anymore. Fowler then shared his love for the American Patriot’s Bible which in addition to being God’s Word, contains writings of the founders on the importance of God in America. As a History graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University, this resonated with me deeply. We must teach the people of this country the truth about its foundation which clearly is based on the Word of Jesus Christ! He then had Trey play his beautifully arranged Patriotic Medley which had the crowd on their feet once more! Following this simply incredible piece, the quartet kept the energy high with Ivey’s arrangement of “Hallelujah Chorus.”

After a brief intermission, the group performed a song Matt Fouch brought with him from his days with Soul’d Out, “Who Is This Man.” This song co-written by Fouch is simply fantastic! Next, Trey Ivey took the lead on “All That Matters To The Lord,” after some continued teasing from both Fowler and Howard. The quartet’s harmonies as well as Fowler’s stellar voice were showcased once again on the powerful anthem “He Is To Me.” Hallelujah!! What a Savior He is to me!! This incredible concert came to a close with a simply brilliant performance of their latest hit “Christ Is Still The King.” Feemster sounded fantastic on this beautiful song! God has blessed these men with the wonderful gift of communicating His Holy Word through these beautifully crafted songs. Their vocals get better and better each time I see them! Looking forward to the next time already!!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I cannot recommend enough that you all go to a LEGACY FIVE concert when they come to your area. You will not regret it at all! As I said above, each concert is better and better! This group is the real deal! Their God given musical talent is clearly evident from the beginning of the first song to the last! Their love for Christ and passion for spreading His Word is also unmistakable both on stage and off. They also are incredibly kind to their fans and make sure to greet them and personally thank them for supporting their ministry.

Be sure and support this incredible group by purchasing their latest album Talkin’ About Heaven as well as an American Patriot’s Bible! Share this Bible with anyone and everyone you meet. We need to put Christ back into this country!
