THOUGHTS:
Eighth Day is a group that I had not listened to before. I am glad that I found this CD!! While I am slightly partial to quartets, I love a good trio with tight intricate harmonies and that is exactly what you get with this group! Eighth Day was formed in 2002 by husband and wife duo Scott and Joni Robinson. They have had twelve consecutive singles that were all Top 40 in the Singing News, with a #1 hit in 2011. Scott sings tenor/ lead for the group and serves as the MC while his wife Joni sings alto. Derek Parker rounds out trio singing baritone for the group since 2004. Parker also serves as the group’s office manager.
This record is a collection of great songs delivered by excellent vocal talent. Joni is featured on several songs which showcase her unique and God given voice. She takes the lead on the mid tempo tune “Jesus Knows” which reminds us that God is always there for us. Trust in Him for He is here and knows what you are going through. The gifted alto delivers the lyric of “Even In The Wind” beautifully. This song of encouragement says even if you feel alone, Jesus still speaks. Just listen for His voice and you will never be the same. Another standout track featuring Joni is the powerful ballad called “Somebody’s Blessing.” This incredible song says that we all can be somebody’s blessing. We must spread the Gospel to all people and shine His light on the world. Amen! Joni is also featured on the upbeat track “Mercy Among Us” which simply says we stand amazed in His presence as Jesus is among us.
The smooth baritone of Derek Parker is featured on the opening track and the title cut called “I’m Gonna Say It” which is a fun up-tempo tune encouraging people to spread the Love and message of Jesus Christ. Jesus is only way to life everlasting! He also takes the lead on the groovy song about His second coming called “It Won’t Be Long.” His powerful voice is also featured on the mid-tempo traditional Southern Gospel style song “Rock Of Ages By And By” and the powerful ballad “Shadow Of His Hand” which praises the Father for His peace and love. We are covered by His grace and no matter what we have done, He will never forsake us!! What a powerful song this is!! Parker rounds out this trio nicely with his rich baritone voice.
Scott Robinson steps up to deliver the fun lyric of “Good Lord’s Been Good To Me.” His country tones and style is showcased on this song of thankfulness to God. We all should be thankful for God’s many blessings.
Songwriter, original member, and lifelong friend of the group, Monty Lane Allen is featured as well on the tender ballad “Waiting For You To Notice Me.’ This beautiful song is from the perspective of God desiring for us to believe in Him. Jesus loves us so much that He sent His only son to die for our sins. It saddens Him when we ignore His acts of Love. He is saying “Child, I’m waiting for you to notice me.” This was definitely one of the standout tracks for me on this album.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I definitely recommend this record to all fans of Southern Gospel music. This is an album chalked full of great songs featuring excellent vocal talent. Scott, Joni and Derek are the real deal!! The standout tracks for me were “Waiting For You To Notice Me,” “Somebody’s Blessing,” and “Shadow Of His Hand.” These songs are well crafted by great writers including Sue Smith and Monty Lane Allen. Each nails the message of the Gospel by reminding us that God loves us more than anything, we must be a light to the world for His kingdom, and God is always there for us and covers us with His grace. You can me a fan this group now and I look forward to future projects!!
Go out and get this CD as soon as possible!! 4 out of 5 stars!!
