THOUGHTS:
Legacy Five is one of Gospel Music’s most beloved quartets. A legacy group of the legendary Cathedral Quartet, Legacy Five has been highly successful in their fifteen plus year history.Their solid lineup of Scott Fowler, Scott Howard, Gus Gaches, Matt Fouch and Trey Ivey have produced some hit projects since 2012 when Fouch joined in the bass position. This special table project features a mixture of new songs and classics featuring the writing talents of Dianne Wilkinson, Uncle Alph LeFevre, Albert Brumley, and Janice Crow. The record begins with the title track “Talkin’ About Heaven Again” which is a simple old fashioned quartet style song. Scott Fowler is featured on this Janice Crow penned song about looking forward to Heaven and its splendor. This song showcases the tight and smooth harmonies of this seasoned quartet. Next, bass singer Matt Fouch takes the lead on the Dianne Wilkinson song “I’ll Keep Working, Watching, Waiting.” This bouncy mid-tempo song talks about the signs of the end times. It says to worry not for God has everything under control. Fouch gives a stellar performance showcasing his smooth bass voice and incredible range. Original member Scott Howard steps up to deliver the beautiful lyrics of the tender ballad “Any Moment Now.” This song about looking toward Heaven fits Howard’s voice like a glove and is very much in the vein of some of his classic features. Any moment now we could go on to glory and experience the wonders of Heaven. This simple lyric reminds us that life is short and that at any time God could call us home. Pianist Trey Ivey has been featured briefly on a few projects before, but on this CD, he takes the lead on the Marty Funderburk & Twila LaBar classic “All That Matters To The Lord” previously recorded by the Imperials. Ivey shines on the verses of this song that says your soul is all that matters to God. Do not place your trust and faith in the things of this world. Next, the quartet covers the LeFevre classic the groovy up-tempo “Let Me Tell You ‘Bout Jesus.” This is a fitting since tenor Gus Gaches was a member of the LeFevre Quartet before joining Legacy Five. The lyrics are simple yet profound express the need of believers to spread the Gospel. We need to tell the world about Jesus and how He saves! Scott Fowler then takes the lead on the mid-tempo jazzy tune called “My Heavenly Home,” which tells about our home with Christ. The quartet then shines on the classic Albert Brumley convention song “Grand And Glorious Feeling” which features once again their immaculate harmonies as well as an impressive low note from Matt Fouch. Following this rousing rendition, the group takes it down a notch with a tender rendition of the classic hymn “His Name Is Wonderful,” which praises the Lord for His blessings and His love for us. Continuing with the classics, the group covers the Charles Wycuff standard made popular by the Happy Goodmans “What A Lovely Name.” Tenor Gus Gaches shines on the parts made famous by the legendary late Vestal Goodman. This rendition definitely does the original justice and the vocals are excellent. The record closes with another convention style song written by Russell Maudlin and Dianne Wilkinson called “Just A Little South Of Heaven.” This jazzy tune continues with the theme of Heaven and its splendor. It says that if we praise Him and live for Him; until we reach that land just a little south of Heaven’s close enough.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Legacy Five is without a doubt one of the best quartets on the road today. This special table project is evidence of this. I am a big fan of convention style songs and this CD did not have a shortage of them at all! Each member gives incredible performances and continues to stay true to the call! Another great project from L5 and another incredible CD release for this year!
